William T. Hoversten werd geboren op 19 januari 1920 in Thompson, Iowa. Op 20 december 1941 gaat hij het leger in, en komt terecht bij de Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Divisie. Op 17 September land hij samen met zijn kameraden aan de Noordkant van Groesbeek, nabij Dropzone Tare. Als hij op 20 september in een truck munitie wil leveren aan D company, 505th P.I.R., wordt hij dodelijk getroffen door Duits Artillerie vuur. Hij heeft Postuum de Silver Star medal gekregen. Zijn Citation luidt: “The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant William T. Hoversten (ASN: 39015424), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action against the enemy in Holland, on 20 September 1944. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army. “
