Ferdinand was born on August 10, 1919, in North Braddock, Pennsylvania, into a family of four children. Two of his brothers also served during World War II. He entered military service in January 1942 and was sent to England in May 1944. There, he was assigned to Headquarters Company, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. On September 17, 1944, Ferdinand made his first combat jump, landing near Groesbeek during Operation Market Garden. On October 9, 1944, he was wounded near the observation tower on Molenweg. He died from his wounds the following day. Ferdinand was initially buried at the temporary American military cemetery at Molenhoek. In 1949, his remains were returned to the United States. On February 11, 1949, he was reinterred at Arlington National Cemetery in the presence of his family. Ferdinand was 25 years old.
