Emil was born on February 5, 1914, in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in Queens, New York, where he earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree before going to work for the U.S. Forest Service in Washington, D.C. On March 20, 1942, he was called into military service. He received his training at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, where he married Dorothy Linn Philips on September 26, 1942. After completing his training, Emil was sent to England in the spring of 1944 and assigned to Headquarters Battery, 320th Glider Field Artillery Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division. His first combat mission was Operation Market Garden. On September 18, 1944, his glider crashed during the landing near Ottersum in the Netherlands. On October 3, 1944, his family was notified that Emil had been missing in action since September 18. It was later confirmed that he had been killed in action near Ottersum that same day. Emil was 30 years old.
