After the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment landed near the Wylerbaan in Groesbeek on Sunday, September 17, 1944, its units were ordered to move toward their assigned objectives. The 3rd Platoon of Company A, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, was sent toward Nijmegen. Among its paratroopers was 24-year-old Corporal Roy B. Lewis. Moving along the Nijmeegsebaan through Heilig Landstichting, the unit cautiously made its way toward the center of Nijmegen. Suddenly, they came under German machine-gun fire, forcing the men to take cover. Corporal Lewis jumped into a foxhole in the front yard of a house. However, another paratrooper was already occupying the position and had a bayonet fixed to his rifle. As Lewis entered the foxhole, the bayonet pierced his leg and severed an artery. The severe bleeding could not be stopped, and Corporal Roy B. Lewis died from his wounds. He was initially buried in the garden along the Nijmeegsebaan. On September 27, 1944, his remains were reinterred at a temporary military cemetery. After the war, he was moved to the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, where he was laid to rest in Plot F, Row 3, Grave 3.
