Andrew was born on June 24, 1925, in Marysville, Ohio, into a family of at least three children. Both of his brothers also served during World War II. Andrew entered military service on October 12, 1943, and received his basic training at Camp Wheeler, Georgia. On April 29, 1944, he earned his parachutist wings at Fort Benning, Georgia. After arriving in England, he was assigned to H Company, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. On September 17, 1944, Andrew made his first combat jump, landing at Klein Amerika near Groesbeek. On September 25, he wrote a letter home telling his family that he was safe and doing well. The letter reached his parents on October 12, bringing them great relief. What they did not yet know was that Andrew had been killed in action two days earlier, on October 10, 1944, during a changing of the guard at the observation tower on Molenweg. Andrew was 19 years old.
