Charles was born on September 10, 1920, in Spokane, Washington. He enlisted on March 2, 1942, and, after completing his parachute training, was assigned to A Company, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. After serving as a pathfinder in Normandy, among other duties, Charles made his next combat jump in the Netherlands on September 17, 1944. During a patrol on September 21, 1944, Charles and his best friend, Bob Murphy, headed toward Mook to support B Company. On the Groesbeekseweg near the cemetery, they walked into a German ambush. Charles was struck in his left side and died at the scene, just days after his 24th birthday.
