Daun Z. Rice was born on December 28, 1923, in Rock Lake, North Dakota. He was living in Lake, Indiana, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army on October 2, 1942, at Fort Benjamin Harrison. Prior to his enlistment, he had attended high school for three years. As a member of H Company, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, he parachuted into the area near Overasselt on September 17, 1944. On September 26, he was killed in action during an encounter with a German patrol. He was 20 years old.
