James was born on February 5, 1923, in Christopher, Kentucky. He enlisted on February 10, 1942, and volunteered for the paratroopers. On July 25, 1942, he earned his parachutist wings at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was assigned to H Company, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. After previously being wounded in Italy and earning the Silver Star Medal, James made his next combat jump on September 17, 1944, landing on Drop Zone O near Overasselt as part of Operation Market Garden. On September 20, 1944, following the Waal River crossing, James was wounded on the Griftdijk in Lent, near the railroad bridge. A bullet struck him in the groin, and he died from his wound later that day. On October 14, 1944, his parents received the telegram informing them that their son had been killed in action. James was 21 years old.
