John was born on June 24, 1921, in Pittston, Pennsylvania. He entered the U.S. Army in September 1942 and, after completing a number of training courses, joined the Pathfinders of H Company, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. After serving in Africa, Italy, and Northwestern Europe, John was killed in action near Lagewald on September 28, 1944. He was initially buried in a field grave near the site where he fell. On February 20, 1946, his remains were reinterred at the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten.
