Einar Flack was born on January 3, 1922, in Norway. After emigrating to the United States, he worked as a machinist for the Ford Instrument Company in Long Island City. Serving as a medic with G Company, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, he took part in several intense battles following his combat jump during Operation Market Garden. On September 26, 1944, Einar was killed in action. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for his actions that day. “The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Einar Flack (ASN: 12157220), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action against the enemy in Holland, on 26 September 1944. The bravery and self-sacrifice displayed by Private Flack’s extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.” Einar was 22 years old.
